Neuromuscular Orthodontics
The Neuromuscular theory focuses on identifying the physiological Rest Position (RP) of the mandible. This position is achieved by relaxing the mandible's postural muscles using Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS). The RP is a neutral, deconditioned position of the mandible relative to occlusion, providing a starting point for establishing a new Centric Occlusion (CO), known as Myo-Centric. This process is documented in real-time through Computerized Mandibular Scanning, allowing practitioners to precisely measure and identify this new centric position.
Neuromuscular Orthodontics (NO) applies this method to set orthodontic treatment objectives focused on functional outcomes. NO considers muscles, fascia, nerves, and all other tissues within the stomatognathic system, including the TMJ and teeth. Historically, dentists have primarily focused on the teeth for a mechanical understanding of occlusion, often neglecting the muscles and TMJ, which are crucial for functional occlusion. Recent research highlights the significant role of mandibular posture and its close relationship with overall body posture. This scientific and holistic approach represents a breakthrough in dentistry and orthodontics, enabling dentists to uncover the hidden physiological characteristics unique to each individual.
